Best Buy deploys CREEPY technology for its customers
Apparently, Corie Barry, the CEO of Best Buy, chose the Creepy shopping experience vs a ten-star gold standard. Facial recognition software runs amok
Most of us love cameras. We use webcams for zoom calls and Skype for business and personal connections. Many are quick to snap photos and post them across Twitter, Facebook, and other media platforms.
As citizens, we live our lives and we are photographed often every day, including our visits to the ATM, Banks, traffic stops, and much more.
In truth, I have no issue with photos taken of me. I’ve been paid a small sum for photos taken in the West Indies though not the bare chest buff kind beach photo, but rather in a casual sport jacket beach front photo taken used to promote tourism to St. Kitts. It was fun and quick. The agency mentioned potential future work and I was called a second time, paid on the spot for a similar photo, and was never updated as to the use of second the casual photo shoot. It really wasn’t something about which I was concerned.
Enter Best Buy
On Thursday, May 5, 2022, I visited Best Buy to peruse video and podcast equipment. I’ve always enjoyed visiting electronic stores and keeping up with the latest gear promotes my creativity.
My visit was simply a visit to see what they had on hand for podcasting. I had previously purchased a Zoom podcast bundle and was looking for other Zoom products to facilitate multiple microphones. I realized quickly they didn’t have the item on hand.
I decided to look around before I left the store.
My experience with Best Buy has been subpar during the pandemic and at that time. During the pandemic, I was told by a Blue Shirt I would be able to visit the store but unable to purchase any item unless I wore a mask. I refused the mask, walked to the earbud section, and attempted to make my purchase and was denied purchase without a mask. Apparently, the Blue Shirts at best buy are not used to a man who says no while at the same time attempting to be calm. I left the purchase on the table and walked out. Had we taken this action long ago
Best Buy would have been open and without ridiculous restrictions.
Best Buy dropped the masks and now you can visit Creepy Best Buy
After leaving the store on May 5, 2022, I didn’t expect any notices from Best Buy. I had limited interaction with any staff members and was in the store a brief time. I kept my phone in my SUV and thus location software wasn’t possible for Best Buy to utilize for my store visit.
The only option for Best Buy to note my visit was facial recognition software.
Had I not received the notice (Image above) I would not have been aware they chose to use facial recognition software. I consider this to be creepy as most customers would conclude.
